What is the difference between dedicated servers and (managed) dedicated server hosting?

Versions of Windows Servers, as well as desktop versions, have different varieties. For example, on virtual dedicated servers, you can install one of the popular versions of the official license — 2008, 2012, 2016 or 2019. The version name directly indicates the year the OS was released. Each version of the system received updates and additional functionality.

For example, Windows 2008 has support for Hyper-V, Server Core and BitLocker, Windows 2016 adds dedicated Windows containers and Nano Server, and the new 2019 introduces an administration method using the Windows Admin Center and many other useful innovations for the system administrator.

Also, each system is presented in several editions — Foundation (supports only 1 processor, designed for up to 15 users), Essentials (up to 25 users, there are preliminary settings for the system, for example, file services, IIS), Standard (license for 2 processors, without user restrictions) and Datacenter (the most expensive option with the ability to run an unlimited number of virtual machines with Windows Server as a guest OS).

Windows Server 2008 has a trial license for 180 days for free, so this particular system can be chosen on VDS KVM servers. But it can also be bought immediately with an official license. It is a stable and lightweight OS that can be configured from the command line. It was this version that replaced the previously popular Windows 2003. In the 2008 version, Terminal Services has been completely updated and there is a built-in Windows PowerShell. Compared to previous releases in 2008 there is a self-healing NTFS.

Version 2012 of Windows Server compared to 2008 has several improvements and more flexible settings for management. Modern UI style user interface, better security, and not blocking port 3389 during multiple RDP connections.

Version 2016 of Windows Server is the choice for those users who want to organize their own cloud infrastructure. The system of well-established backups with Production Checkpoints, even more flexible settings and PowerShell Direct for their implementation.

Version 2019 of Windows Server is currently the newest version of the OS. This system supports virtual machines even on Linux, the Windows 10 user interface and the available Windows Defender with more powerful functionality. This version is the most popular among users due to its enhanced functionality and more modern design.
